Some more uhlans...

I added to my Prussian uhlans this week with a few more bases. It's always nice to get a second rank finished to swell the numbers.

My thanks again to Sean from Newline Designs for taking the time to add these new sculpts to the range. They were absolutely worth the wait.

I'm looking forward to getting them onto the table for their first battle.

I'm not done yet with the Prussian cavalry, but this week I think I'll turn my attention back to the French army and work on some light infantry and (finally!) some dragoons.

  1. Those Uhlans are stunning Kevin you've got the blue coats perfect I'm just painting some newline austrians and I really like them the white took a bit of working out but I'm happy with the way they have turned out

    1. Thanks Jay! I seem to change my choice of blue for the Prussians almost every time I sit down to paint them - probably because I keep forgetting what my 'recipe' was the time before, lol. Are you finding the Austrian white takes more or less time to paint than other uniforms? I've heard some folks say they hate painting white, but I've found the opposite - at least for my 10mm Austrians. Might be a different story for bigger scales mind you. The only thing I find with white paint is it tends to dry quite quickly, so I normally use light greys instead, and save the pure white for the cross belts etc. The Austrians are definitely a lovely army to paint.

    2. i must admit ive quite enjoyed painting the white like you say though it drys ever so quick i test painted the first two with different methods one primed in white with a wash put over him the other i primed in vallejo surface primer desert tan and worked the highlights up through pale sand ivory and off white pure white for straps i like this method best as the highlights are very subtle compared to the wash which darkens them and looks really stark ill post the results on youtube when they are done ive also ordered some 10mm pendraken ACW never painted 10mm so it could be really interesting to see if i give up on them or go blind in the process

    3. Yes, my experience has been very similar when it comes to putting washes over white. You're right, it never looks as good as when you work up the shades from a darker base colour. More effort, but certainly worth it. Hope you enjoy trying out the 10mm ACW. Pendraken has some fantastic ranges to choose from. I definitely need my magnifier when painting those guys though.
